Gina’s journey in fashion began very early in her life. She started when she was merely 15 years old, at her Mother’s store, ‘ELCID’ at The Oberoi Towers, Nariman Point, Mumbai. Interning there gave her an opportunity to see her Mother cater to ‘walk-in’ clients from different parts of the world, since the Oberoi Arcade was the the shopping hub of South Mumbai, and also for the airline crews and hotel guests of many nationalities.
Under the careful tutelage of her Mother, Gina learned how different colors, embroidery, ‘cuts’ and silhouettes could transform women from all walks of life.
“Clothes Give Confidence” was her Mother’s Motto and Gina actually saw how effortlessly her Mother changed the way women looked and carried themselves after wearing a well made outfit.
In order to emulate her Mother, she simultaneously pursued her study of fashion at the reputed Sophia College, where she graduated in both, Fashion and Textile Design.
Gina learnt quickly and began handling clients individually. Very soon she became the pioneer of Western Ready-to-Wear and Made-to-Measure garments.
Gina knew then, that she would take Mother’s legacy forward…..and the rest is history!
When Gina started her own Label in 1989, her entire collection of 120 gorgeous hand-painted cotton mul mul Anarkalis, hand painted by leading artists of Mumbai, was sold out in the shortest span of time.
Today, Gina, after over three decades in the business, creates very selectively and holds limited inventory as almost all her pieces are ‘made-to-order’. This is because Gina believes that this allows her client to get something that is timeless and specifically created… since it has been made just for her!
Some of Gina’s clients have loved the clothes made for them so much that they have passed them on to their daughters, because they still look as good as new and the designs are timeless.
More than anything else said here, the testimonials from Gina’s clients speak volumes about her work.
